District History The Temple Health & Bioscience Economic Development District has played a role in the majority of positive events that have occurred in Temple’s bioscience efforts since its inception in 2003. The District helped to design the Scott & White Cancer Research Institute located on the new Scott & White West Campus and was active in recruiting Dr. Art Frankel to head the Cancer Research Institute. In addition, the District played a pivotal role in the acquisition of the west campus land and facility by Scott & White by entering into a Development Agreement with Scott & White as the land and building were purchased from the city of Temple. The District continues to work with Scott & White to expand the Cancer Research Institute by locating additional labs that could relocate existing cancer research onto the west campus as well are provide critical lab space for recruitment of new scientists. The District is working with Texas A&M, the Central Texas Veterans Healthcare System and Scott & White on the potential of relocating the Cardiovascular Research Institute to the west campus as well. The District is assisting Temple College in locating their new Texas Bioscience Institute to the west campus. The District has encouraged all interested parties, especially the city of Temple, to work in concert with Temple College to have the Texas Bioscience Institute open by the first of 2007. Along those lines, the city has committed $2,500,000 for the important educational component of the bioscience efforts in Temple. The District and the City of Temple Reinvestment Zone is working on the development of 300 acres west of the Scott & White West Campus. This site will house bioscience facilities for private industry as the bioscience economic cluster matures in Temple. |
